Matt was born in New York. He studied trumpet under his dad, a tough classical music teacher and band leader. He had Matt playing operas by the age of nine years old. The discipline helped Matt to play first solo chair in all school bands, and after college, first chair with two concert bands.
Matt had his own band in college, as well as experience with the Ohio State University Band. He enjoyed "Script Ohio" best. During the four years there he spent getting his degree, he was fortunate to perform with many great musicians that passed through Columbus, like Roland Kirk, Art Blakely, Sonny Stitt, Freddie Hubbard, and many more. After college, he performed with Billy Taylor, Wells Kelly, Horace Ott, John Faddis, Chris parker, Chip Jackson, Chris Vadella, Mercury Rev, Dionne Warwick, Kelli Sae, and many others.
Matt made Billboard the first time in the 80's, with a song by Wells Kelly, formerly with, "Orleans."
